Food for Thought Around the Holidays,

Food is so much more to us as a society than just sustenance. It is memories of good times. It is soothing in times of distress. It is warm reminders of holidays past. As we approach the holidays (some of us with delight and some of us with dread over the massive amounts of food), Marcia would like to give you a few basics that will help you have a very healthy holiday. If you remember one trick for the holidays, let it be to eat a meal or snack (Bellybars are a great option!) before you go to those parties to avoid consuming too much "party food". Or take a healthy side dish or dessert for the hostess as a nice gift that everyone can enjoy.

Good nutrition entails eating foods that give you back lots of nutrients and energy, or "nutrient dense" foods. I like to call them your core foods. Core foods are the basics of the food guide pyramid. Just as yoga strengthens your core, if you eat core foods for the bulk of your diet, then everything else peripherally will become strong and balanced as well. It is important to bridge the gap between what we like to eat and what we need to eat.
